Internship Opportunity: Cultural Organizing

Create Forward is seeking a creative, resourceful, self-starter ready for an opportunity to hone their skills as a cultural organizer. This intern will support the day to day management of a national community storytelling project on mass incarceration called MASS STORY LAB. Mass Story Lab has travel to nine U.S cities reckoning with the impact of mass incarceration. The Cultural Organizing Intern will support the Create Forward team in reaching these communities. Create Forward is a social impact firm with a growing client portfolio that includes major cultural institutions, foundations, universities, and a national humanities network. We design innovative strategies to advance equity and justice. We are a learning organization and seek creative thinkers who want to work collaboratively to generate new projects and internal systems that constantly improve the quality of our work in communities.

Cultural Organizing Intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Attend meetings and conference calls and maintain meeting minutes;

  • Maintain a national calendar of upcoming Mass Story Lab dates;

  • Research community demographics and local policy around criminal justice reform; in local cities in preparation for Mass Story events;

  • Assist with development of digital tools for community engagement and storytelling;

  • Organize and archive content generated from each Mass Story Lab;

  • Engage our audience via social media channels;

  • Generate content for Mass Story Lab blog.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong  written and verbal communications skills;

  • Resourceful and energized by working at a start-up company;

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice with a particular interest in criminal justice reform;

  • Some facilitation and program development experience is a plus;

  • A background in storytelling and/or creative writing;

  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office, Keynote, and Squarespace;

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

 Social Media and Graphic Design Intern

Create Forward is seeking a creative, resourceful, self-starter seeking an opportunity to hone their skills as an emerging communications professional. This internship is ideal for someone passionate about community development and social justice. The right candidate will support the delivery of our multi-platform communications strategy and develop a strong portfolio of projects that will propel them forward professionally (so no getting coffee and doing mindless grunt work).

Communications intern will be responsible for the following:

·      Research content for blogs and social media posts

·      Assist with maintaining editorial calendar

·      Schedule social media posts

·      Organize content for bi-weekly email newsletter

·      Design graphics for event flyers and social media outreach

·    Create something new: pitch and take on one project of your own that helps to advance the company’s mission. This is your opportunity to build your professional portfolio and leave your mark on the company.

 

The Ideal Candidate:

·     Excellent written and verbal communications skills;

·    Resourceful and energized by working at a start-up;

·    Demonstrated commitment to social justice;

·    Demonstrated knowledge of effective social media engagement as a business development strategy;

·    Proficient use of  Canva, Adobe Indesign, Photoshop and/or other photo editing software/apps;

·      Proficient use of Microsoft Office and Keynote;

·      Proficient use of Mailchimp and Canva;

·      Able to navigate Squarespace websites;

·      Ability to work independently with limited supervision;
